Rubber T-Lok

receives Award for Excellence in Technology & Innovation

Concrete Institute of Australia

The NEW Saferoads Rubber T-Lok temporary barrier won the Concrete Institute of Australia’s Victorian Branch Award for Excellence in Concrete 2023, in the category Technology and Innovation.

The Rubber T-Lok Barrier reduces waste through the incorporation of crumbed rubber from recycled tyres in the concrete mix. This is the first ever temporary crash barrier with a recycled element, ensuring the recirculation of materials and pioneering sustainability in the road safety industry.

The Concrete Institute of Australia’s Victorian Branch Award for Excellence in Concrete 2023 (Technology and Innovation) was presented to Saferoads, and project collaborators Professor Tuan Ngo’s team at Melbourne University’s Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, and Tyre Stewardship Australia.

It recognises an outstanding contribution in construction, concrete design and materials. The state award sees the Rubber T-Lok Barrier eligible for the Concrete Institute of Australia’s national award to be announced on 12th September, 2023.

The project sought to address the issue of waste tyres in Australia - a significant environmental problem with an estimated 56 million tyres generated nationally each year, and 60% of end-of-life tyres being disposed of improperly, in landfill or illegal dumping.

Why choose Rubber T-Lok for your project?

  • Safety Assurance
Saferoads Rubber T-Lok barriers can be deployed with confidence, being independently crash tested to MASH TL-3, with ASBAP, VicRoads, Transport for NSW and QLD Department of Transport and Main Roads.

  • Achieve sustainability, recycled content & circular economy objectives
Rubber T-Lok barriers incorporate crumbed rubber from recycled tyres, thereby reducing waste and promoting the recirculation of materials. This is the first temporary crash barrier with a recycled component, leading the way with sustainability innovation in this space.

  • Increased barrier durability and lifespan
The inclusion of recycled rubber into T-Lok barriers enhances the flexibility and durability of the barrier, resulting in better energy absorption and therefore increased lifespan due to less cracking and breakages during transport and deployment.
